I am a firm believer that family portraits should be about more than what you look like – they should also say something about who you are.
Families are complex, and they are all unique.
Each family has different activities they like to participate in – from weekends on the lake to the unusual fascination with haunted hotels. They all have different styles – from country casual to formal traditional, and most of all, they all want something at least a little bit different when it comes to family portraits.
Environmental Portraits:
Families that are more casual usually choose outdoor locations for their family portraits. Using a location the family owns is a great choice – from a weekend getaway to a homestead that has been in the family for generations.
Family-owned locations personalize their portraits by adding an interesting back story. Family-owned locations aren’t always possible though, but there are always parks or other scenic places that complement the family.
Classics portraits for more traditional families.
More traditional families often choose indoor locations like their home, or in our studio. These allow us to create more formal portraits in a style that suits them.
This family chose to have this portrait of their daughter made in their family home. The location helps to add a personal feel to the portrait, while the portrait of the same daughter in the background helps to tell a beautiful story.
Relationship Black & White
Some families are less concerned with indoors/outdoors than they are with exploring the special relationships in their family. For these clients, we usually create beautiful black and white portraits.
I believe that color portraits are beautiful, but that the color can be distracting. Our eye see’s an overall “beautiful, colorful” image, and fails to see the details.
The look a dad gives his little girl or the special way a mom hugs her son are priceless nuances in a family, and they tell a story all their own.
