Winter Portraits in Texas: Don’t Believe What You’ve Heard
People Told Us Winter Was the Wrong Time. We Decided to Prove Them Wrong.
There is a common assumption that winter is a bad season for outdoor portraits in Texas. Bare trees, gray skies, nothing to photograph.
We disagree, and we have the portraits to prove it.
A Session on the Brazos River
One cold winter day, we headed down near the Brazos River specifically because of what the season offered there. Grays and browns in every direction, textures and depth you do not get any other time of year. We knew the final portraits would be black-and-white from the start, and the winter palette gave them exactly the mood we were after.
The variety of looks we created in a single session ranged from high fashion to something closer to a “moody old film still”.
The Result
One portrait from this session went on to win an international photography award.
Winter did not limit what was possible. It made the portraits better.
